About Richard Vickers

Richard became interested in the possibilities of interactive media in 1994, gaining industry practice as a digital media producer on a range of web and interactive projects for commercial and arts organisations, before entering academia in 2000. Richard is an experienced project manager having undertaken leadership of complex projects, working with diverse multi-disciplinary teams. He is a judge for the BAFTA Film Awards; he has previously been a juror for the prestigious BIMA Awards and Media Innovation Awards in the UK and also for the Europrix TTA, Europe’s foremost new media contest. He is joint Editor in Chief of the Journal of Media Critiques with Prof Can Bilgili, Asst Prof Gulum Sener and Asst Prof Arif Yildirim. He has an international research profile, speaking, presenting and exhibiting at leading conferences, festivals and events internationally. Richards research has two main focuses; the first is at the intersection of media, culture and technology, focussing on the area of networked convergent/emerging media, exploring the creative opportunities and societal/cultural impact. He is exploring the notion of expanded documentary: due in part to the democratisation of technology and a culture of participation, documentary is no longer fixed to an anthropological gaze and didactic strategy, and now encompasses diverse practices and disperse forms.  The second focus of his research is that of exploring and utilising digital technologies for innovations in learning. He is currently working on a number of projects that aim to develop more open, interdisciplinary and collaborative pedagogical frameworks. Much of this is work is undertaken collaboratively between Richard and the co_LAB team at the University of Lincoln, as well as a network of national and international partners. Richard was a founder of co_LAB: the Collaboration Laboratory Innovation & Research Group at the University of Lincoln. co_LAB brings together people from different fields, disciplines and contexts to collaborate on innovative trans-media projects and to explore and develop new approaches to collaborative teaching and learning through the use of networked digital tools, and through the transferral of knowledge, skillsets and teaching styles. co_LAB is made up of colleagues from the Lincoln School of Film and Media who collaborate with a wide range of international partners and who are breaking down traditional methods of teaching through experimentation, collaboration and knowledge exchange.
