About Julian Free

Despite being born in Plymouth into a Royal Navy family, Julian Free joined the Army and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1986. Prior to this he graduated with a B.Ed (Hons) from Exeter University. He has completed a Masters in Defence Studies (Cranfield University, 1995), Army Command and Staff College (1994-5), The Higher Command and Staff Course (2007), the Royal College of Defence Studies (2009), NATO Pinnacle Course (2012), UK Pinnacle Course (2013), US CJFLCC (2014) and the Windsor Leadership Strategic Leadership Programme (2015-16). He was appointed MBE in 2001, OBE in 2009 and CBE in 2012. General Julian has deployed on operations to Kuwait, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq, Cyprus and Afghanistan in UK, UN and NATO appointments and trained and served in the UK, Germany, America, Canada, Belize and Kenya. He has commanded units at battery (G Parachute Battery (Mercer’s Troop), 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery including operational tours to Kosovo and Sierra Leone), regiment (26th Regiment Royal Artillery including operational tours to Iraq and Cyprus) and brigade-level (4th Mechanised Brigade including an operational tour to Iraq and Op CHARGE OF THE KNIGHTS). On promotion to major general he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps preparing and holding the Corps HQ at readiness for the NATO Reaction Force commitment throughout 2012 and as the NATO Combined Joint Task Force HQ for 2014. Until February 2017, General Julian served as Commandant of the Joint Services Command and Staff College at the Defence Academy. Since leaving the Army, he has taken up the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln.
