About Bruce Hargrave

Bruce Hargrave is a Senior Lecturer in the College of Science.  He joined the University in October 2013, after 28 years service in the Royal Air Force. He has a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Physics and gained his MBA from the Open University Business School in 2000.  He taught the Financial Strategy course on the Open University Business School MBA programme for ten years and, whilst also serving in the RAF, completed the University of Lincoln’s PGCE in Post-compulsory Teaching and Learning in 2008.  He is currently researching for a PhD. Bruce is also a keen wildlife photographer and his work can be seen at In his RAF career, he trained as a maritime navigator on the Nimrod MR2 aircraft, operating primarily in the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) role from RAF Kinloss in Scotland.  He served on exchange with the Royal Navy on 820 Naval Air Squadron as an ASW Observer on Sea King Mk 6 helicopters flying from HMS Ark Royal.  He was an aircraft captain and commander on both the Sea King and the Nimrod. He is a Qualified Navigation Instructor (QNI) and was awarded an A2 instructor category from the RAF’s Central Flying School.  He commanded the Maritime and Transport Aircraft section of the School of Air Navigation at RAF College Cranwell.  He also served as Officer Commanding the Nimrod Recce Cell, planning the day-to-day operations of the Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft. As an instructor in the RAF’s Air Warfare School, he has taught on and been course manager for the Air Battle Staff Course and the Higher Air Warfare Course.  He was also course manager for the Senior Officers’ Study Programme . Bruce is a keen cyclist and completed an unsupported, solo ride from John O’Groats to Lands End in 2012, raising money for Help 4 Heroes.
