About David Gannon

David joined the University of Lincoln in 2000 as a Senior Lecturer in Advertising, Marketing & Public Relations after a very distinguished and broad career background. His experience in both the private and public sector marketing helps him to offer a unique experience to students. His first job was with the Manchester Evening News Group where he received formal training in sales. During his five years with the group he acquired skills such as designing adverts, advising clients and selling advertising space and he moved through the ranks to become Group Features Manager. David broadened his career path and became an Account Director for Clough Howard and Richards Ltd a Manchester based national advertising agency group. After a successful three years as an Account Director David decided to set up his own advertising agency and subsequently became a partner and director of CW Advertising and Public Relations Ltd. As well as being a part owner of the agency he took the roles of Copywriter and Account Director. The agency handled a variety a media and promotional tools including TV, Radio, Magazines and provided the services of PR, Trade exhibitions and even packaging advice. With such a broad variety of clients from many different industries, David gained a wealth of knowledge about the marketing needs of both public and private sector organisations throughout the UK and Ireland. This, coupled with the practical experience of using all promotion techniques, makes David Gannon a real asset to students at The University of Lincoln. A successful six years was spent developing the CW agency and after this period David wanted to try something new and became the Marketing & Communications Director of Broughtons a large Bathroom distributor based in the UK. Whilst at Broughtons David gained valuable knowledge of business to business marketing. The insight he can offer students shapes their perceptions of marketing far beyond what they imagine it to be. He then secured a job as Head of Marketing for Kirklees Metropolitan Council -  one of the first such posts in the country. He was part of the revolution which saw the need for public sector organisations to become more competitive. Kirklees Council was a pioneer in introducing a marketing-led approach to communications management within the public sector. Whilst at Kirklees he was responsible for marketing training programmes, customer surveys, market segmentation strategies and also corporate strategy which included internal communications and customer-service programmes. In addition to developing councils’ corporate image and internal communications skills, he was also responsible for PR and Media relations and providing marketing strategies and support for operational departments. Ten years were spent in the public sector and David was appointed a member of the Cabinet Office’s Consultation committee on Local Government and the Citizen’s Charter . Other senior posts in local government include Head of Communications and Information at the London Borough of Havering and Head of Communications at Lincolnshire County Council. In addition, he also spent many years as a copywriter working for clients directly, and agencies across the UK and Ireland, and as an independent marketing communications advisor. TEACHING As a freelance consultant, using his previous experience of developing training programmes and seminars he quickly established himself as a talented lecturer in HE. In 2000 The University of Lincoln invited David to take part in the formulation of the PR degree, a C IPR approved course. Additionally, he has been Programme Leader for the Lincoln International Business School’s advertising courses, and continues to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. David holds a M.Sc. in Marketing and the CIM Professional Diploma. He lectures on a variety of courses within the disciplines of Marketing and Advertising .
