    About Timothy Bates

    Dr. Bates has held academic and research posts at the University of Sheffield, the University of Southampton, The Royal College of Surgeons of England, University College London the University of Nottingham and research fellowships in Sweden, the USA and Italy. He has over 30 years experience in biomedical research with ongoing research projects in: mitochondrial metabolism, mitochondrial pharmacology, mitochondrial toxicity, cancer pharmacology and bacterial meningitis. Dr. Bates provides consultancy in the areas of mitochondrial pharmacology, mitochondrial biochemistry, mitochondrial toxicology and mitochondrial metabolism, both to international pharmaceutical companies and other major industrial clients/collaborators as well as to other research partners in the UK and abroad. Dr. Bates is an active member of the Biochemical Society, the British Pharmacological Society and the British Neuroscience Association and has spoken at many international scientific conferences in the UK, USA, Italy, France, Germany, Holland, and China. Dr. Bates is a regular grant reviewer for many U.K., USA and European research charities/organisations including the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the European Union, the Italian Department of Science and Technology, The Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science, The Alzheimer’s Association (USA), The Parkinson’s Disease Society, AGE UK and The Special Trustees Fund of St. Thomas’ Hospital. Dr. Bates is also the Chief Scientific Officer of Drugs With A Difference Limited, a company he founded in 2013, specifically to develop novel small molecules with mitochondrial targets for use in the treatment of cancer and other diseases. Dr. Bates is also a scientific board member of the Purple Society, a major USA children’s cancer research foundation. Dr. Bates is also a member of the external assessor panel for the NHS Evidence section of the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), where his experience in biomedical research and development is used in the specific areas of (1) Drugs and Medical Devices, (2) Research.

    I am the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Drugs With A Difference Limited. A company based at BioCity Nottingham Europe’s largest Bio-Incubator. The company’s business focus is on developing novel intellectual property (IP) in the area of drug repurposing, and licensing this IP to international pharmaceutical companies for rapid and early patient benefit.
