    About Sharon Black

    Sharon Black is the Director of Nurse Education and Deputy Head of the School of Health and Social Care in College of Social Science. She qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1996 with the University of Nottingham.

    As a nurse, Sharon worked in a variety of settings but specialised in Stroke and Stroke rehabilitation. Her career took her to London where she worked as a Stroke Research Nurse and Nurse Specialist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery before moving to St. Mary’s Hospital in London as a Sister on their Stroke unit.

    After completing her MA in Health law with the University of Hertfordshire, Sharon Moved into higher education as a Senior Lecturer at London South Bank University in 2003 where she delivered a number of modules and courses. She then moved to the University of Bedfordshire in 2007 to take up the role as Director of Practice Learning to provide the strategic lead for quality in practice learning. Here she also took the opportunity to take on the role as a Fellow in the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning where she worked on a number of teaching and learning projects. Following on from that, Sharon moved to Oxford Brookes for a short period in 2014 as Programme Lead for Nursing and care Specialities. Throughout her academic career, Sharon has focussed on teaching and learning and the student experience.

    Sharon successfully completed her PhD in 2011 - ‘Being a mentor who fails a pre-registration nursing student in their final placement: Understanding failure’ (An interpretive, hermeneutic phenomenological study to explore, interpret and develop an understanding of mentors’ experiences of failing pre-registration nursing students in their final placement).

    Department Responsibilities

    In her current role, Sharon supports the Head of School in its management and direction, including line management of all members of the Nursing team, workload planning and allocation, staff appraisals, participating on recruitment and promotion panels, contributing to validation and monitoring events. She leads the management of the pre-registration and continuing professional development portfolio of courses and makes a significant contribution to developing and growing the post-registration and post graduate health related programmes and short courses. This includes managing the Nursing educational contracts with Health Education East Midlands and the local Health Communities and Trusts.

    Sharon is responsible for developing and sustaining strong partnership relationships with a range of external bodies including: the Local Education Training Board (LETB), the local Health Communities and Trusts, and other Higher Education Institutions in the region, and represents the School and University on nursing and health-related external practitioner, employer, and policy bodies and networks

    Sharon participates in the full range of activities in the School, including teaching, engagement and enterprise alongside research, including fostering synergies across disciplines. She is the lead for teaching and learning across the school.
