About Primali Paranagamage

I have a strong interest in socially responsible design that links research with practices related to the built environment. This interest has led to theoretically informed practice, funded research, publications and projects in the following areas. 1.Design for health and well-being - older people’s housing, rehabilitation of street children, 2.Regeneration and urban design – resettlement of slums and shanty dwellers, mixed income communities, walkability and neighbourhood design, social sustainability, holistic sustainability, post occupancy evaluation 3.Resettlement and rehabilitation after disaster such as in post war and post tsunami scenarios 4.The production of space in social change In my early career, the numerous personalised houses I designed explored the ‘House as a symbol of the self’.  A highlight of this practice includes the design of a house for a former cricketer of the World Cup winning Sri Lanka cricket team. At the other end of the scale, being passionate to explore the role architects for the marginalised, my entry to the Sri Lanka Institute of architects’ competition for a master plan and housing design to resettle canal bank dwellers was judged as the winner. It was successfully completed and to date sustains an upwardly mobile community. The work I exhibited on ‘What is Socially Responsible Design?’, organised by the Pratt Institute New York explored the contribution of architecture in rehabilitating Street Children. This exhibition toured the world for two years. As project architect for a leading practice, The Design Group five, Chartered Architects and Engineers, I was responsible for the design of the Colombo International School (CIS). In the University of Moratuwa, RIBA validated School of Architecture I taught design studio and theory modules for undergraduate and post graduate architecture courses. I was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship for PhD studies. This allowed me to pursue PhD studies in the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, under the guidance of Professors Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson, founders of Space Syntax. I have conducted Post- doctoral research on the following projects:  Sustainable Urban Environment (SUE); Engineering and Physical Science Research Council, grant value £1.6M   http://www.sue-mot.org Health and Care Innovation Research Centre (HACIRIC), Engineering and Physical Science Research Council, grant value £ 10M http://www.haciric.org Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research Centre (IMCRC) Engineering and Physical Science Research Council grant value £ 13M http://www.lboro.ac.uk/eng/research/imcrc/index.html Creating and sustaining mixed income communities in the UK, Joseph Rowntree Foundation grant value £50,000 http://www.jrf.org.uk/publications/creating-and-sustaining-mixed-income-communities-good-practice-guide
