Lincoln School of Film & Media
College of Arts
Jon Holmes is a Lecturer in the College of Arts, specifically in Digital Media on BA (Hons) Media Production and BA (Hons) Media Studies, as well as delivering a number of specialist master classes at levels 1, 2, 3 and Masters across the school. Chiefly, Jon Holmes is a digital artist and educator for film, games and VFX production. He is keen to collaborate with other filmmakers, designers and technicians in the above fields whilst developing his own portfolio. Alongside his work at the University of Lincoln and in the freelance digital media sector, he is a keen blogger and vlogger via his pseudonym The Curious Engine. He often posts updates of projects and regularly share the skills, knowledge and experience that he has gathered over the last 15–20 years via audio/visual guides and discussions. His hope is to educate as well as inform by sharing practice and skills that are often hard to access outside of the industrial bubble. In 2016/17, he has been working as a VFX artist and Colourist for 3 high production value short film projects: ‘The Last Viking’ and ‘The Knock’ directed by Philip Stevens and ‘Natalie’ directed by Mikey Murray. He is also working as lead VFX artist/supervisor and colourist for the feature film ‘Lapwing’, due for release in 2018. He has also been involved as a Creative Technologist in the Lincoln-based Innovation Lab for the 1215.today virtual House of Culture; as a speaker and student mentor for the EYA (European Youth Awards) 2016, in Graz, Austria; and, as part of a knowledge/teaching transfer project with students from the University of Lincoln and The Hague University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands, helping students develop skills in 3D modelling, texture painting, game engine technology and Physically Based Rendering (PBR). He is actively interested in VFX, cinematography and post-production (editing and colour). His current passion is for 3D modeling and texture painting for both VFX and games production and colour timing for film and video. He is a proud member of the co_Lab research group and has a keen interest in collaboration between students, staff and practitioners – right across Europe – and believes that the dissemination of practice-based knowledge and information is vital to help young people exploit the exciting new opportunities emerging digital technologies afford them today. Jon is also a keen advocate of sharing good practice and experience, and currently holds the position of External Examiner for another Higher Education institution in the UK.
