Dr Duncan Rowland is the Reader in Cultural Computing at the University of Lincoln, UK, where his current research is focused on creative computing in the arts. His primary interest is in exploring the human condition through relationships with digital devices and more traditional media. Duncan has worked previously as an experimental psychologist investigating face perception at the University of St Andrews, a software developer in the games industry (Colin McRae Rally 3 on PS2 and XBox), managed a VR research laboratory in Michigan, and been a Senior Research Fellow in UX at the Mixed Reality Lab, Nottingham. He has published over 70 scholarly articles (with total citations of over 4000 https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=oV6LtL4AAAAJ) including a best paper award at CHI2011. He has previously received funding from the EU, EPSRC, ESRC, AHRC, NESTA and JISC. Duncan has recently collaborated on projects that have featured in the Transmediale 2013 arts festival, been nominated for the Lumen prize with Katy Connor and a BAFTA with UK Arts Group Blast Theory, and won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013 with a Social Media Garden. He consults on App development and currently has eight iOS apps available in the app store that together total over 100,000 downloads. Finally, Duncan has recently completed a practice based Masters Degree in Fine Art at the University of Lincoln for which he received a distinction.
