About Marian Rizov

Marian Rizov holds the Professorial Chair in Economics at the Lincoln Business School having previously worked in Middlesex University Business School and previously in Trinity College Dublin and the Catholic University of Leuven, where he completed his PhD. Marian’s main research interests concern applied microeconomics and finance. Initially, trained as an agricultural economist, he has developed a diverse research portfolio covering economic development and productivity, food economics and agribusiness, labour economics and industrial relations. Since the mid-1990s Marian has been involved in research on the central and east European transition economies and obtained funded research fellowships from the EU, FWO Belgium, and the HEA Ireland. His contributions are on the role of human capital and entrepreneurial skills in household resource allocation and the effects of soft budget constraints on firm capital structure and performance. Later on Marian has diversified his research into the field of rural development as well as food demand, diet quality and health. More recently, Marian has also extended his research into the domain of industrial relations and firm labour management practices. Firm performance and firm productivity analysis has been a reoccurring theme in Marian’s research which has attracted external funding from the British Academy, Low Pay Commission, and the Slovak VUB Foundation. Marian has supervised to successful completion thirteen PhD candidates as of the end of September 2017 and is active in supervising doctoral researchers in the broader themes of food security and nutrition, productivity and labour management practices and industrial relations, and institutions and economic development.
